This is a list of characters who appear in the Queen's Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner. This list does not include any mythological or historical figures that are referenced in the text.
A[]
- Agape is the youngest daughter of Baron Phoros and the cousin of Eddis.[1] She was briefy engaged to the previous king of Sounis.[2]
- Aglaia is one of Attolia's attendants.[3][4]
- Akretenesh is the former Mede ambassador to Sounis.
- Duchess Alenia is an Eddisian noble. Eugenides once stole her cabochon emeralds and dedicated them to his god.[5]
- Ambiades was an apprentice to the magus and an informant for Attolia.
- Baron Anacritus is a middle-aged Attolian noble who is loyal to the queen.[6] After the end of the Eddis-Attolia war, an Eddisian garrison was stationed in his territory.[7] Later, when Eugenides was injured in an attempted assassination, Costis knocked Anacritus down while trying to clear a path for the king.[6]
- Ansel is Melheret's secretary. He is a free man, and once accepted a bribe from Eugenides to throw a figurine owned by Melheret overboard.[8]
- Baron Antimonus was the official spymaster of the previous king of Sounis.[4]
- Archimedes is a circus performer who is said to be able to balance four or five olives on his nose.[5]
- Aristogiton is a member of the Guard and a friend of Costis.
- Baron Artadorus is an Attolian noble. Under the suggestion of Baron Erondites, he misreported the kind of grain grown on his property in order to evade taxes, but quickly corrected his accounts once the deception was discovered by Eugenides.[7]
- Aulus is a prince of Eddis who was sent to Attolia by Ornon in order to force the king to rest after being injured.[9]
B[]
- Basrus is a slaver employed by Baron Hanaktos. He led the attack on Sophos's family's villa,[10] but later helped Sophos identify Hanaktos's co-conspirators.[11]
- Benno is a caravan guard who worked for Roamanj. He comes from Southern Gants.[12]
- Berrone is the daughter of Baron Hanaktos. She accidentally interfered with her father's schemes by purchasing Sophos from the slave market,[13] then helping him escape from her father's megaron.[14] After her father was killed, Sophos made his uncle her guardian and settled one-third of Hanaktos's holdings as her dowry.[15]
- Boagus is a relative of Eugenides's who was sent to Attolia by Ornon in order to force the king to rest after being injured.[9] Later, he was part of the group of Eddisians that studied the Mede's style after Melheret sparred with Eugenides.[4]
- Breia is a cousin of Eugenides and Eddis and the sister of Cleon. Eugenides stole her gold earrings after she insulted their family.[16]
- Brinna is the head cook of Attolia's kitchens. She knew Eugenides when he was pretending to be an errand boy in the palace, and put sand in his food after he became king because she was offended that he never came to visit the kitchens again.[17]
- Baron Brimedius is a Sounisian noble. He was one of the rebel barons in the civil war, and he held Sophos's mother and sisters captive after their villa was attacked.[18]
C[]
- Chloe is one of Attolia's younger attendants.[19] She was dismissed by the queen after breaking an amphora,[20] but was later brought back.[21]
- Chlorus was a cousin of Eugenides and Eddis. He was in the raiding party that died in Attolia at the start of the war.[22]
- Cleon (of Attolia) is one of Eugenides's attendants. After the king woke up screaming from a nightmare, he told Costis that they did not have a key to the king's bedroom.[21]
- Cleon (of Eddis) was a cousin of Eugenides and Eddis and the brother of Breia. Although he fought physically with Eugenides when they were children,[23] Stenides claimed that he would feel sorry about it afterwards.[16] He was wounded in a battle stopping Attolia's advance up the main pass of Eddis and later died of infection.[1]
- Baron Cletus is an Attolian noble who is loyal to the queen.[6] Several months after the end of the Eddis-Attolia war, Cletus was involved in negotiations to move an Eddisian garrison from Anacritus's territory to his own.[7]
- Baron Comeneus is a Sounisian noble who rebelled against the king in the civil war. The rebels wanted him to serve as regent for Sophos, but Comeneus was not aware of the full extent of Akretenesh's plot and would have been assassinated as soon as Sophos produced an heir.[11]
- Conyx was one of Sophos's father's men. He died in the attack at Hanaktos's megaron.[24]
- Costis is a member of the Guard and one of Eugenides's most loyal supporters.
- Creon was a commander in the Eddisian army. He was in the raiding party that died in Attolia at the start of the war.[22]
- Crodes is a cousin of Eugenides and Eddis. He serves as one of Eddis's royal messengers[23] and later was a key figure in Eugenides's plan to steal the queen of Attolia. After practicing his Attolian accent for month, Crodes helped a group of disguised Eddisian soldiers sneak into Ephrata.[25]
D[]
- Damon is a member of the Guard in Aristogiton's squad. He was one of the opponents the king defeated while sparring with the Guard, and is said to be a better swordsman than both Costis and Aris.[26]
- Demos is a wine bearer in the palace of Eddis.[1]
- Dionis is one of Eugenides's attendants and the nephew of a baron.[27] His family has never supported the queen.[7]
- Dirnes is a slave in Baron Hanaktos's fields who could sometimes get extra food from a friend who worked in the kitchens. Sophos once saved him from a beating.[28] Later, he and Ochto helped Sophos escape, though they declined to leave with him.[24]
- Dite is the oldest son of Baron Erondites.
- Diurnes is a member of the Guard who was in Costis's former squad. Costis mentioned that he could sometimes be slow to move in the morning.[29]
- Domisidon is a member of the Guard in the Third Century. After Sejanus was arrested for attempted regicide, he casually griped that he wished Sejanus had succeeded.[9] Later, he mockingly called Costis "the king's lapdog."[9]
- Driumix is the head of Attolia's soot kitchen.[17]
- Druic is a performer from Kathodicia. He once performed the Eddisian knife dance in front of the king, though his father had warned him never to attempt it.[30]

- Baron Efkis is an Attolian noble.[31]
- Elia is one of Attolia's attendants. She once commented on the king and queen's dancing.[7]
- Elon is a valet who worked at the hunting lodge where the magus stayed during his captivity in Eddis.[32]
- Enkelis is a lieutenant of the Guard who was briefly promoted to captain during Teleus's imprisonment, though the men said they would not follow him.[33]
- Baron Erondites is an Attolian noble who does not support the queen.
- Eugenia is the daughter of Irene and Eugenides. Hector is her twin. She is born to be the next Thief.
- Eugenides, also known as Gen, is the Thief of Eddis and king of Attolia.
- Eugenides (the Elder) was the previous Thief of Eddis. The younger Eugenides is his grandson and was named after him.[5]
- Lady Eunice is a friend of Heiro's. Heiro named Eunice and a few other girls as potential allies to the king after dancing with him one evening.[6]
- Eurydice is one of Sophos's younger sisters. Though she appears quite ladylike, and always saved a cake for Hyacinth, she is not afraid to pull pranks on Malatesta.[2] She was held captive by Baron Brimedius after their villa was attacked, but escaped to Eddis.[15]
- Exis is a squad leader in Costis's old century. He is well-educated and known for his cleverness.[33] He claims that Baron Erondites will be the victor if the king and queen end up fighting,[33] and later suggested that the king is only a puppet of the queen.[9]

- Galen is the court physician of Eddis.
- Gessiret is a Mede tailor whom Kamet once conned some money from.[34]
- Ghasnuvidas is the Mede Emperor. He has been diagnosed with Tethys lesions, and passed over his own son to make his nephew Naheelid heir.
- Gitta Kingsdaughter is the younger daughter of the King of the Braels, and the great-granddaughter of Eugenia, the daughter of Eugenides and Irene. Her full name, Gittavjøre, means "God's gift", but can be interpreted to mean "well-born".
- Godekker is an escaped slave currently living in Zaboar. He helped Kamet and Costis while they were in the city.
- Gorgias is the lieutenant of the slaver Basrus.[35]
- Gudix is a bartender at the Vine and the Cup.[36]

- Haemus is a squad leader in the Guard.[37]
- Lady Hanaktia is the wife of Baron Hanaktos. She schemed with her husband to make their daughter Berrone queen of Sounis. After her husband's death, she helped Sophos identify their co-conspirators in hopes of winning his favor.[11] She then rallied her husband's soldiers to help Sounis fight against the Medes.[15]
- Baron Hanaktos was one of the rebel leaders in the Sounisian civil war. He was responsible for the attack on Sophos's family's villa, and hoped to make his daughter Berrone queen. Sophos killed him in Elisa as an example to his other barons.
- Hector (of Attolia) is the son of Irene and Eugenides. Eugenia is his twin. He is the heir to the Attolian throne.
- Hector (of Eddis) was Eddis's Minister of War and Eugenides's father. He was the younger brother of the previous king.
- Hegite is one of Baron Phoros's daughters, and the older sister of Agape.[1]
- Heiro is the younger daughter of an Attolian baron and a supporter of the king. Though Baron Erondites dismissed her as "artless, unwed, and useless", she is in fact quite clever.[6] She frequently danced with the king, interfering with her father's plan to make her sister Lady Themis the king's mistress.[6]
- Helen is the queen of Eddis.
- Helius is a slave in Baron Hanaktos's fields, and Ochto's second-in-command.[38]
- Hemke is a farmer in the Mede Empire. After Costis re-tinned a large pan for his family, he allowed Costis and Kamet to spend the night in his shed, and told them of a route through the Taymets that would avoid the main roads.[39]
- Hermander was a cousin of Eugenides and Eddis. He was wounded in a battle stopping Attolia's advance up the main pass of Eddis and died of infection afterwards.[1]
- Hilarion is the oldest of Eugenides's attendants, and the second son of a coastal baron. He is one of the queen's supporters. He once tried to take the blame for one of Philologos's pranks on the king, since Philologos was the heir of a baron, but the king declined to punish either of them. He promised to pay Costis any price if he would help convince the king to get down off the palace walls.
- Baron Hippias is an Attolian noble and Relius's successor as Secretary of the Archives.[40]
- Hormud is Nahuseresh's cook.[41]
- Hyacinth is the son of a minor Sounisian noble. Although Sophos disliked him, Hyacinth was the only person his ago on Letnos, and the two were companions. He betrayed Sophos's family to Baron Hanaktos.[2]
I[]
- Iktenos was Eugenides's great-great-grandfather and a previous Thief of Eddis. He was also an architect who designed part of Attolia's palace, including its library.[42] His name may be a reference to the historical architect Ictinus.
- Ileia is one of Attolia's younger attendants. She once remarked to Costis that she didn't think the king ever did as he was told.[21]
- Imenia is one of Attolia's most senior attendants. She once brought Costis to the queen's apartments when the queen wished to speak with him.[7]
- Ina is one of Sophos's younger sisters. Though she appears quite ladylike and delicate, she inherited her father's spine.[2] She was held captive by Baron Brimedius after their villa was attacked, but escaped to Eddis.[15]
- Iolanthe is one of Attolia's attendants. She announced the arrival of Petrus after he found quinalums in the king's lethium.[21]
- Ion (of Attolia) is one of Eugenides's attendants. He was once sent to bring Costis to the queen's guardroom. Later, the king assigned him to attend Sophos during his stay in Attolia. He has a sweetheart named Zenia.
- Ion Nomenus was Sophos's attendant at Brimedius and Elisa. Loyal to Hanaktos, he fed Sophos false information and was imprisoned after the Baron's Meet.
- Irene is the queen of Attolia.
J[]
- Janus was Helen's younger brother. He died of sickness at a young age.[43]
- Jeffa was Nahuseresh's previous secretary. He trained Kamet to be his successor before dying of a putrid throat.[44]
- Juridius is the younger brother of Pheris and the son of Marina. He was exiled to Ferria for his part in Erondites's plot to burn grain wagons.
K[]
- Kamet is an escaped slave who was formerly Nahuseresh's secretary.
- Kep is a houseboy in Nahuseresh's household.[41]
- Kepet was a Setran slaver. He killed a slave who had escaped while he was sleeping, and was later killed by Costis.[45]
- Kimix is Berrone's brother. Sophos punched him in the attack at Hanaktos's megaron.[24]
- Kos is a friend of Dite's. He helped Dite pack his possessions after he was exiled from Attolia, and afterwards Dite asked him to deliver two letters and a purse of money to his family.[9]
L[]
- Laecdomon is a member of the Guard who is loyal to Baron Erondites. He started a rumor that the king faked the assassination attempt, and later tried to kill Eugenides during a sparring match.[26] The king declined to have him arrested afterwards, predicting that Laecdomon would be killed by Erondites.[46]
- Laela is a freed slave who was once owned by Nahuseresh. Originally purchased as a dancing girl, Kamet persuaded Nahuseresh to keep her as a matron over the other girls after she fell out of favor.[41] She lied to Kamet about Nahuseresh's death,[37] and was later purchased and set free by Attolian agents.[17]
- Lamion is one of Eugenides's attendants. After condescending to Philologos, Philologos responded by calling him an idiot.[40] Later, he was assigned to attend Kamet during his stay in Attolia.[17]
- Layteres is an Attolian courtier and the former lover of Legarus.
- Legarus was a member of the Guard in Aristogiton's squad, whom he sometimes calls Legarus the Awesomely Beautiful.[47] He comes from a landowning family, whereas Aris is okloi, which sometimes caused tension within the squad.[47] His lover was responsible for the squad's promotion to the Third Century,[6] ostensibly so that Legarus would have easier access to the inner palace, but in actuality as part of a plot to assassinate the king.[48]
- Lepkus is a member of the Guard. He once rhetorically asked whether the Guard would still be loyal to the queen if she truly loved Eugenides, prompting rebuke from Costis.[33]
- Lader is the first person Eugenides killed as a boy. He delivers a prophecy from the Gods in the final book.
- Lias was Helen's second oldest brother. He died of sickness at a young age.[43]
- Livia is one of Eugenides's aunts, and would not have thought it beneath her dignity to grab a passing nephew by the collar.[16]
- Luca is a slave in Baron Hanaktos's fields. He reproached Sophos for claiming that the slaves owed loyalty to their baron,[38] and later asked sardonically whether they should go with Sophos when he left.[14]
- Luria is one of Attolia's attendants.[21]
- Lycos is one of Eddis's cousins. He was exiled when she was six.[43]
M[]
- Maleveras was an Attolian traitor who nearly dethroned the queen less than a year into her reign. She cut out his tongue and left him in a cage in the courtyard for a week before having him executed.[1]
- Marin is a slave whom Kamet once fell in love with. Formerly one of Nahuseresh's dancing girls, he sold her to another man after learning that Kamet wanted to run away with her.[49]
- Baron Meinedes is an Attolian noble.[27]
- Melheret is a Mede soldier who was ambassador to Attolia after Nahuseresh.
- Meron is a member of the Guard in Aristogiton's squad. He was one of the opponents the king defeated while sparring with the Guard.[26]
- Baron Minos is an Attolian noble who is loyal to the queen.[6] He owns a bridge crossing a gorge near the territory of Barons Anacritus and Cletus, and charged them both extravagant fees for the use of it.[6]
- Mirad is Nahuseresh's valet.[41]

- Naheelid is Nahuseresh's brother and the heir of the Mede Empire.[41]
- Nahuseresh is the brother of the Mede Empire's heir and former ambassador to Attolia.
- Nestor was Helen's pony while she was nine years old.[43]
O[]
- Ochto is the overseer for Baron Hanaktos's field hands. A former slave himself, he is an effective overseer who also works alongside his men.[38] He and Dirnes later helped Sophos escape, though they declined to leave with him.[24]
- Onarkus was the previous head of Attolia's kitchens. Eugenides bit him twice when he was pretending to be an errand boy in the palace, and he sent Onarkus away after becoming king.[17]
- Oreus is a slave in Baron Hanaktos's fields. He gave Sophos the nickname "Zecush", or "Bunny".[38]
- Ornon is an Eddisian diplomat who has been an ambassador to multiple countries.
- Baron Oronus is an Attolian noble.[50]

- Peliteus was a previous king of Sounis. He was confirmed on a battlefield rather than in the official space at Elisa.[11]
- Pelles is one of Eugenides's attendants. He was sent by the king to cancel a meeting with Baron Meinedes.[27]
- Petrus is the Attolian palace doctor. He also operates a charitable hospital in the city that studies new medical techniques.[48]
- Phaedrus is a cousin of Eugenides and Eddis. He fought physically with Eugenides when they were children, and Stenides claimed that he would not feel sorry about it afterwards.[16]
- Pheris is the grandson and heir of Baron Erondites.
- Philologos is one of Eugenides's youngest attendants, but the highest in rank. Although he felt uncomfortable about all the pranks they played on the king, he himself was responsible for putting a snake in the king's bed. He was the only one of the attendants who believed that they should be punished more harshly for their misbehavior, and he is more perceptive than the king's other attendants.
- Philonikes is (supposedly) a friend of Eugenides, whom he called out to after being freed from the king's prison in Sounis.[51]
- Phokis is a member of the Guard. When Eugenides used the Guard's bath, he asked whether they had been responsible for any of Eugenides's many scars.[46]
- Baron Phoros is an Eddisian noble with four daughters, including Agape and Hegite.[1]
- Phresine is Attolia's oldest attendant.
- Phrinidias is a cousin of Eugenides.[22]
- Pilades is an elderly man[27] who works in the Ministry of Agriculture.[7] He is quite enthusiastic about his field of study, and once gave the king a very zealous and detailed lecture about the types of grain grown in Attolia.[27]
- Piloxides is a general in Attolia's army.[31]
- Pol was the captain of Sophos's father's guard.
- Prokep is an Attolian commander who is in charge of the border forts in the northeast, near Magyar. The king had him recalled to the capital so that he could meet him while he was considering suitable transfers for Costis.[6]
- Pundis is a slave in Baron Hanaktos's fields. He became a slave after he couldn't pay his gambling debts.[38]
- Pylaster was Helen's oldest brother. He died of sickness at a young age.[43]
- Phaedon is Costis' sister's son

- Rakra is a free servant in Nahuseresh's household.[41]
- Relius is a scholar and Attolia's former Secretary of the Archives.
- Roamanj is a Ferrian caravan master who operates in the Mede Empire. Costis and Kamet briefly worked as caravan guards for him.[12]
- Ruk is Druic's brother. Although not a performer himself, he did the planning for his brother's shows.[30]
- Runeus is a worker in Baron Hanaktos's fields. When he first arrived, he was unhappy about being lower in the pecking order than Sophos.[38]

- Sejanus is the second son of Baron Erondites and a former attendant to the king.
- Semiux is a cook in Attolia's kitchens.[17]
- Seprus is a member of the Guard. After Teleus disciplined the entire Guard for Costis's misbehavior, he made a disparaging remark about Costis.[52]
- Shef is a Setran slaver. He was part of the group that caught Kamet and Costis in the hills near the Taymets.[45]
- Sigis Malatesta was Sophos's ninth tutor. He is from the Peninsula and claimed to have been educated at the University of Ferria, though his ignorance of many subjects makes that unlikely.[2] He survived the attack on Sophos's family's villa by jumping into the latrine pit.[18]
- Simkit is a caravan guard who worked for Roamanj along with his brother Tikir.[12]
- Skell or Skerrell is a caravan guard who worked for Roamanj. He is from Braels, and plans to travel to the mountains on the eastern edge of the Mede Empire, where he says he will make enough money to return home and buy land.[12]
- Sophos is the king of Sounis and a former apprentice of the magus.
- Sosias was a cousin of Eugenides and Eddis. He was in the raiding party that died in Attolia at the start of the war.[22]
- Sotis is one of Eugenides's attendants.[21]
- Sounis was the previous king of Sounis, and the uncle of Sophos.
- Baron Stadicos is an Attolian noble. Influenced by Nahuseresh, he changed Attolia's orders at the First Battle of Thegmis, leading to defeat.[53]
- Baron Statidoros is a Sounisian noble. He was one of the rebel barons in the civil war, and the other rebels tried to make him a scapegoat after Hanaktos's death.[11]
- Stenides was one of Eugenides's older brothers and a watchmaker.
- Stepsis was a cousin of Eugenides and Eddis. He was in the raiding party that died in Attolia at the start of the war.[22]
- Sudesh is a Mede artist. He always breaks some part of his figurines after they are finished, to appease the gods who might be angry at him for striving to match their perfection.[49]
- Baron Susa is an Attolian noble. He is baron over the land where Costis's family lives, and paid Costis a coin after he accidentally revealed private information about the king.[7] Sophos and the magus tried to approach Susa when they first arrived in Attolia, but were turned away.[54] He is Pheris' paternal grandfather.[55]
- Sylvie is Berrone's maid. She helps Berrone with many of her ridiculous schemes, despite knowing how foolish they are.[14] She was sent away after Berrone helped Sophos escape the Hanaktos megaron, but Sophos promised to bring her back.[11]

- Timris is Costis' oldest son.
- Tarra is a cook in Attolia's kitchens.[17]
- Teleus is the captain of Attolia's guard.
- Temenus is one of Eugenides's older brothers. He is a soldier[56] and broke Helen's nose with a practice sword when they were children.[57]
- Tenris is a cousin of Eugenides and Eddis.[16]
- Terve was Sophos's eighth tutor. An old army veteran, Terve was meant to teach Sophos riding, swordfighting, and military history, but he was frequently drunk, allowing Sophos to pursue other studies. Many of his lessons involved asking Sophos to create defensive plans for hypothetical attacks.[2]
- Thalia is Costis's younger sister.[58] She lives on the Ormentiedes family farm with her father.[7]
- Lady Themis is the older daughter of an Attolian baron and has been twice widowed. Her father hoped that she would become the king's mistress, but the king kept dancing with her younger sister Heiro instead.[6]
- Therespides is a member of the Eddisian court and an informant for Attolia. Despite knowing this, Eddis does not have him arrested, and sometimes uses him to send false information to Attolia.[59] He catches Eddis visiting Eugenides at night and assumes that they are having an affair.[60]
- Tikir is a caravan guard who worked for Roamanj along with his brother Simkit.[12]
- Timos (of Eddis) was a cousin of Eugenides and Eddis. He was part of the group of soldiers that helped Eugenides steal the magus from Sounis.[61] He later died in a battle stopping Attolia's advance up the main pass.[1]
- Timos (of Sounis) is a houseboy who works for Baron Hanaktos. Sophos stole his shirt in order to sneak into Hanaktos's megaron,[14] and the two later got into a scuffle at dinner.[24]
- Titus is a cousin of Eugenides and Eddis. He once beat Eugenides so badly that he broke several ribs.[62]
- Troyus was one of Sophos's father's men. He died in the attack at Hanaktos's megaron.[24]
- Tykus Namikus (Tycho) is the Esphestian tutor of Gitta Kingsdaughter

- Vedra is a farmer in the Mede Empire. While Costis re-tinned a large pan for her family, she offered him and Kamet both food and water, and sent them off with a large package of food the next day.[39]
- Verix is one of Eugenides's attendants. He was assigned to attend Sophos during his stay in Attolia.[4]

- Xanthe is Eddis's most senior attendant.[23] She is illiterate and served as Eddis's nurse when she was a younger girl.[43]
- Xem is the youngest son of the captain of the riverboat Anet's Dream.[34]
- Xenophon is an Eddisian general. He was in charge of the attack on Ephrata in which Eugenides abducted the queen of Attolia.[63] He died in the battle of the Naupent.
- Xikander is one of Eugenides' attendents, among the ones who dislike him. His brother is Xikos.
- Xikos is one of Eugenides' attendents, and the brother of Xikander. As with his brother, he dislikes Eugenides.
- Baron Xorcheus is a Sounisian noble. His property is small and of little significance, but it is the oldest created barony in Sounis. He was one of the rebel barons in the civil war.[11]

- Yorn Fordad is the Braeling ambassador to Attolia. He was present when Eugenides questioned Kamet about the location of the Mede fleet.[17]
Z[]
- Zerchus is a cook in Attolia's kitchens.[17]
- Zenia is Ion's sweetheart. He arranged to meet her in the gardens when he was supposed to be attending Sophos.[64]
Other[]
- The magus is a scholar and an advisor to the king of Sounis.
- The Queen Thief was Eugenides's mother. Since she died before her father did, she never officially held the title of Thief of Eddis.
- Eugenides has several unnamed sisters who are described as "mostly honest" housewives.[65] After Eugenides lost his hand, Attolia speculated that the title of Thief might go to one of his sisters' children.[66]
- Sophos's father is a duke and the half-brother of the previous king of Sounis. He and Sophos have not always gotten along, but he proudly supported his son after he became king.
- The Duke of Ferria is a noble on the Peninsula who offered Dite the position of court music master after his exile from Attolia.[21]
