"Eddis Goes Camping" is a short story set in the Queen's Thief universe. It was originally published under the title "Eddis" in the 2007 paperback edition of The King of Attolia.

Plot[]

Nine-year-old Helen sneaks out of the palace on her pony after the Spring Festival. She is travelling to an abandoned and partially collapsed temple more than half a day's ride away, which she wants to keep secret from the other children in the palace. After offering a portion of her dinner on the temple's altar, she camps overnight nearby.

She wakes up from the cold in the middle of the night, and realizes that her firewood has disappeared. Seeing a fire burning in the temple, she enters it again and finds that it has been miraculously restored. Three gods are roasting pigeons in the fire and eating her food. They invite her to join them, and casually inform her that she will be the last Eddis.

In the morning, her encounter with the gods seems like a dream. Although Helen concentrates very hard on remembering what happened, she eventually forgets. She does not remember again until after her father dies. When she is informed that she is now queen, Helen replies that she will be Eddis rather than Eddia.

Trivia[]

  • In the short story "Thief!", it's said that the king of Eddis had two sons. However in "Eddis Goes Camping", he has three.
